SURFACE DESIGN AND ART LICENSING
ARTIST & PATTERN DESIGNER
LET’S MAKE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL TOGETHER
Hi there! I’m Katie, a professional artist and surface designer.
The heart of my job? To create seamless repeating patterns that can be licensed by retailers, product developers, interior designers, and, of course, new friends like you.
All of my patterns begin as pen-and-ink illustrations, gouache paintings, and carved block prints that I carefully create by hand.
I turn my art into digital vector designs that can be applied to any surface with a pattern. My work has been printed on wallpaper, home goods, gift wrap, and more. If you’re a creative with an idea you’d like to bring to life, please reach out. I’d love to collaborate!
XO, Katie

A seamless pattern, also called a repeating pattern, can be digitally tiled or repeated infinitely without showing a seam or break in the imagery. This means that product developers can place the digital pattern on almost anything—fabric, art prints, physical products, etc.
To achieve the seamless repeat, a designer vectorizes their original art. Vectorizing is a digital process, usually done in design software like Adobe Illustrator, that allows the artwork to be recreated at any scale without losing its original clarity and shape. Once vectorized and turned into a pattern block, the blocks can be placed side-by-side to create the continuous image or surface design.

So many things! As an independent surface designer, I license my artwork to other brands for their creative projects, and, I also design my own original products that I sell through print-on-demand shops like Spoonflower and my Katie Lyn Designs gift shop. I also collaborate with interior designers and smaller boutiques to develop custom work for their clients.
Basically, I keep myself busy bringing fresh patterns to the world!

I am open to working with any creator who appreciates my process and vision. Although my professional background has been in product development for home decor, gifting, and stationery, I am always eager to tackle new projects and love to connect with fellow creatives in other industries.

Great question! That will depend on the type of license you need for your project. You can check out my licensing page for more details, or you can always email me to get a quote tailored to your project.
